Increasing participation in the youngest division heralds a good sign for growth.
The golf community is always encouraged when young people pick up the game. The Singapore Junior Development Tour (SJDT), promoted by LLD Sports, continues to see a healthy pipeline if the recent SJDT Youth Day Challenge 2026 held in July at Laguna National Golf Resort Club is any indication.
The series saw 15 players in the E Division (8 years and under), reflecting the continued growth of junior golf at the grassroots level. The event also saw many new faces competing for the very first time, a testament to the welcoming and inclusive environment fostered by the SJDT. Players and parents alike provided positive feedback, praising the tournament, sponsored by Descente, with its carnival atmosphere.
In line with the SJDT’s commitment to player development, yardages were increased across the older divisions. This was done to slowly and progressively prepare players to compete on longer, championship- length courses at the international level.
Several players returned impressive scores despite the added challenge, demonstrating their growing strength, skill, and adaptability. This progressive approach ensures that juniors are not only competing today but are also being groomed for success on the international stage.
Most players were accompanied by their parents, who stepped onto the fairways as caddies. This created a wonderful opportunity for parent-child interaction, with many sharing quality time together on the course.
Parents and players alike also made new friends within the golf community, strengthening the social fabric of junior golf in Singapore. Coaches were also present throughout the day, and many commented on the value of such tournaments in developing the child’s interest, motivating players to practise and improve, and to build character and resilience through competition.
In the Girls B Division, Faith Lim emerged as champion after a keen contest with Temperance Tan who finished second. Avelyn Tan was third. Nigel Seah claimed top spot in the Boys B Division, with Lee Seunghan finishing a shot behind in second. Emmanuel Wong came in third.
Jerlene Ng secured victory in the Girls C Division with a shot over Maeghan Emilee. And Noble Hsu won the Boys C Division despite a triple bogey on his third hole. He Ng fought back to finish with a 78 and a one-shot win over Ethan Ng.
In the Boys E Division, the youngest category, Damien Tan ran away with the title with Anders Seah coming in a distant second. Yu Chengxiang also coasted to victory in the Girls E Division, with Amelia Tang finishing in second place.
The SJDT Youth Day Challenge 2026 was a resounding success, and the SJDT looks forward to continuing to provide competitive yet enjoyable platforms for junior golfers of all ages and abilities. The growth in participation, especially in the younger divisions, and the progressive increase in yardages for older players, are promising signs that Singapore’s junior golfers are being well prepared for the international stage.
